Last night Rosanna and I made a trip out to Cresskill to try out a sushi restaurant recommended to me called Umeya. To be blunt, I really did not like the food there. I hate having to publicly be critical of restaurants, especially when I get responses like this, but I suppose one or two bad meals here or there isn’t that bad considering the fact that I eat out every meal.
From the beginning I really wanted to like this place, however, I just don’t think it was meant to be. Here are few reasons why:
- The service there was just okay. My main complaint is that there was a very long wait between the salad and the sushi, even though the place was not crowded. It was also annoying how they served us the miso soup at the same time as they served us the sushi. I assume they just forgot to give it to us with the salad… Just like how they forgot to give us spoons to eat it with.
- Every piece of sushi had too much wasabi on it, and it seemed to over power the taste of everything else to the point where I had to force myself to eat each piece. I don’t even like wasabi, so the whole meal was just painful.
- The pieces of fish were smaller than what you’d get almost anywhere else that’s half decent. The fish seemed fresh, but overall the meal did not impress me.
Anyway, I’m hoping that we just caught this restaurant on a bad night. There are a lot of other sushi places in this area that I want to try though, so I do not think that I’ll be going back to this place ever again. Sorry Umeya.

Matt Japanese people don’t drink miso soup with spoons. Stop being so white. And that actually looks like the right sized non-SUV style sushi.
do i look japanese to you?
Don’t feel bad about sharing your opinions on restaurants. You’re just keepin’ it real and tellin’ it like it is. Peace!
Nothing disappoints me more than bad sushi because I love sushi!! Sorry you had a bad experience.
Ugh–nothing worse than a bad sushi experience. Miso soup WITH the sushi? I don’t think so.
That sucks that the meal was bad when you had to pay $33 =*( I am on a big sushi craving.. so that just looks so tempting to me lol… I really need to get my fix… too bad you are not here or I would drag you out to all these great sushi places around here ^_^
Maybe people will stop opening up more sushi joints. We’re already super saturated and the quality is going downhill.
Go eat some filipino food. There are a bunch of places over by the five corners in JC. I was just there this week and happily pigged out.
i’ll eat some filipino food. any particular place in JC you recommend?
This is a post in itself. I’ll put one up.
Dang it…now I am hungry. I cannot talk ‘the husband’ into going to sushi places. He is a meat and potatoes kind of guys…well he is from Texas so what can I really expect
No offense but I think you should go to Korean and Chinese owned sushi places…Umeya might be too advanced for you.
I go to Umeya sometimes too but I see that many customers are people who like Japanese sushi and have had sushi in Japan. The quality is completely different from most sushi places around that area.
I mean, I’m not saying you should like the Japanese style, but I don’t think you should consider them as being “wrong” about giving miso soup with the sushi, for an example, because that’s how they eat.
At any place you go for sushi, you can ask them to prepare “sabi-nuki” meaning “without wasabi” or ask them to set aside wasabi so that you can use the right amount of wasabi. That is how Japanese would do, particularly when they bring in small children. You can also ask them to bring miso soup later if you like. Just a piece of advice.
