About a month ago Paul decided to plan a boxing match watching party for the November 15th Pacquiao vs. Cotto fight on HBO. I wasn’t aware that Paul was a boxing fan, however, 1.25 million people bought the fight on HBO, so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised?
Anyway, since this was our first boxing match watching party we had no idea what kind of food to serve. Google – “food to serve while watching boxing match” - you’ll see that there isn’t much help out there for people like us. We ended up just having a random assortment of food that ranged from hot wings, summer rolls, and guacamole to dog soup. Okay… only Margaret ate the dog soup.
Here are a bunch of random questions. Please feel free to answer as many as you feel comfortable with in the comment section below.
What do you all think about our food choices for the boxing match? Are we missing something obvious? Is there a better hot sauce to use for hot wings than Frank’s? Is it better to cook hot wings for 20 minutes at a higher temperature or an hour at a lower temperature? How do you define a ripe avocado? Do you put salt and scallions in your dog soup?
You may be saying to yourself, that sure is a lot of food… what did you guys have to drink? Glad you asked, idiot. j/k j/k – you’re not an idiot, that’s a very astute observation. I’m working with some friends at Linwood Liquors in Fort Lee on setting up a new blog called I Blog What I Drink, and you can find the pictures of our boxing match beverages of choice over there. Spoiler alert – one of the drinks may or may not be a “delicious” rum milkshake.
I’ll end this post by just letting you all know that I did a Lower East Side cupcake crawl yesterday morning in the City, so there will be at least one more cupcake related post that I’ll try to get up by the middle of this week.

I’ve heard Texas Pete is good for wings, but who knows? They are all similar to my taste buds.
…Dog soup? Meh, not a fan of the idea.
OK, as an attendee of this party I have several comments.
#1, Everything was delicious, in the following order from most to most. Wings, Tacos, Guac, Rum Milkshakes, Onion Dip, Spring Rolls, Margaritas. Honorable mention goes to the chips. There were really no misses at this event. Except maybe the dog soup, that was not so good.
#2 That dog straight up used me. He acted all buddy buddy to get on my lap, so I figured we were homies…Only to realize my lap was closer to the food than the floor was.
Now, what about that Chaluhla hot sauce? Maybe we could have had some alternate sauce here and there? Perhaps other Blue Cheese dip? Maybe some chunks of serious stinky blue up in there?
And come on Matt, you gotta squeeze that avocado before you buy.
What do you all think about our food choices for the boxing match? — looking good Matt; i definitely approve of the shrimp summer rolls – they look good.
Is it better to cook hot wings for 20 minutes at a higher temperature or an hour at a lower temperature? —
long method:
a) defrost wings, and put them into a pressure cooker. let cook for about 15 minutes to “render” some of the fat out
b) dry and coat in light flour (if you want), drop in deep fryer
c) toss in ___ HOT SAUCE
d) finish off in oven – broiler like 5 minutes
e) toss in ____ HOT sauce and serve
————
fast method: defrost, and cook slow and low for about 25 minutes on a rack in the oven. toss in ____ HOT SAUCE. broil for about 5 minutes. toss in _____ HOT SAUCE. serve!
How do you define a ripe avocado? — soft to the touch, should bruise with medium pressure on the skin.
Do you put salt and scallions in your dog soup? — LOTS OF SCALLIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! salt to taste, and LOTS OF GARLIC. dog meat smells.
Wait, like soup made of actual dogs???
@donna – yes, soup made of actual dogs.
please explain to people that you’re joking about the dog soup. not everybody thinks this is funny.
@amy – obviously i’m joking. i think it’s pretty obvious that picture is a purposely terrible photoshop job.
Real live Koreans eat real live dog soup every day – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosintang
Its about funny as this tortured baby cow with red mistreated adult cow sauce over linguine I’m about to eat.
I knew you were joking, but the poster who asked didn’t get it.
@amy – donna was just joking
I want some spring rolls
No 7 layer dip? That’s always a must.
I want some spring rolls toooooo.
i want some hot pockets
you should get some steve and ed’s hot sauce from shoprite. do they have them up there?
@tom – there are plenty of guys named steve and ed up here
Finger foods are always a good bet for a fight night event. Something my sister likes to do is to serve food from the region that each fighter is from. For example, Pacquiao is from the Philipines, so you can serve Lumpia.
Another angle is to name all your dishes with a fight theme. For example, you should definitely serve “punch” and maybe some onion rings…”black-eyed” pea chili, upper-cut fries, “black and blue” berry pie and perhaps a “knock-out” alcoholic beverage. You get the picture. Sounds like a lot of fun. Let us know if you host a Superbowl party! =)
